The purpose of this position is to share the UNITE HERE HEALTH message by encouraging the utilization of benefits according to plan provisions and best healthcare value and supporting our Participant Engagement programs which identify, educate, and activate participants who have either chronic, or acute, health conditions. The Health Promoter represents the face of the fund, especially to participants while providing benefit, claim and health care education and information to this multi-cultural community. They are responsible for engaging with our participants in multiple channels; in-person in our regional offices, by phone in response to an outbound call campaign, or by visiting their workplace.


  • Acts as the positive “face” of the Fund for the Fund’s participants, unions, employers, providers, and vendors
  • Provides benefit plan and eligibility information to participants, providers, unions, employers and others, including enrollment events
  • Collaborates and partners with the Plan Operational Support Manager as needed, particularly around walk-ins
  • Meet with, educate, and activate participants regarding participation in programs designed to improve health outcomes; this requires a strong working knowledge of Fund and community programs coupled with significant discretion and judgment when providing guidance
  • Provides proactive education to participants by phone and in person at the office
  • Visits worksites to engage participants in conversations regarding their health and healthcare as needed
  • Utilizes effective listening skills to recognize and communicate issues to management including trends and anomalies
  • Maintains basic knowledge of plan benefits, including benefit materials, processes, policies, etc. and how to assist members to connect with the HRT team as needed.
  • Seeks assistance on issues unable to resolve independently in a timely manner
  • Effectively interfaces with Health Resource Team to resolve member issues
  • Coordinates and conducts focused outbound call campaigns
  • Participates in benefit presentations as needed
  • Assists in special projects
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities and requirements of the job


  • College degree preferred or equivalent work experience

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a healthcare, Union or community engagement environment is strongly preferred
  • Experience with performing customer service duties in person and/or over the phone
  • Experience with multi-cultural communities\
  • Minimum level computer skills in a Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) environment: Intermediate
  • Minimum level computer skills in a Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) environment: Intermediate
  • Bi- or Multi- lingual skills (written and verbal) required - Spanish
  • Excellent service and communication skills required, including the ability to engage participants in conversations, and communicate empathy
  • Ability to:
    • Manage competing deadlines and multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
    • Work positively, and productively as part of a team, as well as independently
    • Work with union and contributing employer representatives to foster a positive relationship and solve problems with the fund
    • Maintain confidentiality
    • Perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation
    • Travel occasionally
